CHARITY PARTNER - GREENHOUSE SCHOOLS PROJECT
Greenhouse is a registered charity that provides sports and arts programmes to 11 to 16 year olds in disadvantaged or deprived neighbourhoods and schools. Greenhouse believes that participation in sports provides a powerful opportunity for vulnerable young people to learn critical life and social skills. In addition to improved fitness, Greenhouse programmes help young people to learn teamwork, and to increase their self-confidence and self esteem.
Greenhouse was founded following a highly successful pilot project in August 2002 in which it used the facilities of St Paul's Boys' School to provide a holiday multisports programme for young people from the local Castelnau Estate. Since then, Greenhouse has grown rapidly in order to meet the increasing demand for its programmes.
Greenhouse today employs approximately 37 full time coaches and 34 part time coaches, with a further 51 who work casually on a self-employed basis. These coaches provide sports and special needs programmes in over 30 schools throughout some of the most disadvantaged neighbourhoods in London. As part of its programmes, Greenhouse runs a football club in Southwark with over 400 members, full time table tennis programmes in 14 different schools, 5 full time basketball programmes, 4 full time special education needs programmes and multi-sport programmes during term time, weekends and holidays.
Greenhouse's fully qualified and trained coaches teach football, swimming, table tennis, trampolining, street dance, and a number of other sports to thousands of young people per week. For many of the young people, this is the first coaching they have received in these sports.
