Londoners set for Paralympic Day- 8 Sep 2011 00:00:00
International Paralympic Day is taking place in Trafalgar Square today, Thursday 8th September, giving members of the public a whole day of Paralympic activity, Paralympic sport demonstrations and the chance to meet international and GB athletes.
At lunchtime, members of the public will have the chance to see ‘Blade Runner’ and BT Ambassador Oscar Pistorius take on some young school children from one of London 2012’s Get Set schools at 1:15pm.
There will also be a 50m race between 100m World Champion Marie Amelie Le Fur and Beijing Gold medallist April Holmes.
From 3pm till 6pm, members of the public can watch demonstrations of Powerlifting, Sitting Volleyball and Judo.
Football fans should come and watch the Blind Football penalty shoot-out starting at 6pm between the Blind Football GB squad, players from the Chelsea and Swindon youth teams and former professional players including Chris Kamara, Matt Le Tissier and Ray Wilkins.
At 7pm, members of the public can witness the official invitation by the International Paralympic Committee to athletes around the world to come and compete at the London 2012 Paralympic Games next summer.
There will also be a ticketing station to get more information on the range of tickets that will go on sale on Friday, 9th September, and how people can apply for tickets.
Seb Coe, chair of the London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games said: ‘I urge everyone to come and take part in International Paralympic Day. It will be a great day for the public who want to find out more about the Paralympic Games and see for themselves why it is such an inspiring and unique event’.
The Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, added: ‘The London Paralympic Games will be an amazing festival of elite sport and you can feel the anticipation growing. International Paralympic Day will offer people a great chance to find out more about the Games and to see up close some of the best athletes who will be competing in 2012’.
