A £17m five-year deal has been signed by Virgin Money, the financial services arm of the Virgin group, to replace Unilever's Flora brand as the official sponsor of the London Marathon from 2010 onwards.
The London Marathon has become the world's biggest one day fundraising event, with a record 36,396 participants raising £46.5m this year. Since the launch of the race in 1981, more than £400m has been raised.
Virgin Money are looking at a programme of initiatives to build upon the sense of community and fun the London Marathon enjoys. They will utilise the expertise and network of Virgin Unite, the group's not-for-profit entrepreneurial foundation and will also include an official partnership in the first year with Virgin Unite Valued Partner CLIC Sargent, a charity who care for children and young people with cancer and leukaemia, in both hospitals and the community.
The 2009 event has already received over 110,000 UK applications for the public ballot and continues to grow year-on-year.
