Mayor Johnson makes Olympic debut- 16 May 2008 11:10:00
The mayor attended his first meeting of the Olympic board yesterday ahead of the International Olympic Committee coordination commission’s arrival next week, which is making its annual visit to inspect progress. The IOC's three-day visit will provide the mayor with a chance to meet perhaps the most crucial stakeholders in the Games.
Johnson’s long term focus is bearing down on costs – a campaign pledge - and emphasizing the Games' sporting legacy over the regeneration benefits. The Mayor is to appoint a financial expert to scrutinize the budget for the London Olympics and has vowed not to increase the £625million contribution from London council taxpayers. London City Hall's total bill for the Olympics is £1.825 billion, including £900million from the London Development Agency and an extra £300 million agreed last year in a revised budget.
