SII 08: PL still keen on global plans- 12 Jun 2008 07:36:00
Premier League chief executive Richard Scudamore told the 250 industry attendees at the Sport Industry Interview 2008 that the league was pushing forwards with the controversial plans for globalisation.
Scudamore commented that the plans to hold an extra round of regular-season matches starting in 2010-11 were still in discussion.
He stated: ‘The league needs to play overseas because the English market is saturated. If you are to take it on to the next level, you have to think internationally and globally.
‘I would hate it in five years time we were the fifth most watched league because we’d stood by watching others go past us in the fast line. There is no sports property in the world that has achieved globalization. We are at the very beginning of the potential.’
The 20 Premier League clubs last week delayed a final decision on the proposed ‘39th game’ following the league's annual general meeting last week.
