Murray thriller peaks at 10.5m- 1 Jul 2008 10:23:00
Andy Murray’s thrilling late night five-set win over Richard Gasquet in the 4th round of Wimbledon peaked at 10.5m viewers for BBC1, according to viewing figures released by the broadcaster.
Murray's win, which set up a quarter-final tie with number 2 seed Rafael Nadal, also achieved a 44.7% audience share during the match climax.
Gasquet had stormed into a two sets to nil lead and was serving for the match at 5-4 before Murray produced a stunning comeback taking the match late into the night despite the increasingly poor light on Centre Court.
4m people were watching the early stages before the 6 O'clock News on BBC1. That had risen to 5.5m by 8pm on BBC2. And then the switch back to BBC1 at 8.30pm produced a peak audience of 10.5m by 9.30pm.
Murray takes on Nadal on Wednesday afternoon with the prize of a Wimbledon semi-final spot up for grabs.
