The NBA has rolled out its Jr. NBA community basketball programme in the UK aimed at encouraging children to take up the sport.
The NBA’s youth basketball development programme, already established in the US, will provide thousands of aspiring players in England, ages 12 to 18, with access to free basketball coaching instruction and competitions, in addition to coaching development and volunteer recruitment for parents and adults.
The creation of the Jr. NBA and Jr. WNBA UK programmes by the NBA and the Women’s NBA has been implemented with the support of Reach & Teach Community Development Services, London Active Communities, adidas, and England Basketball.
Chicago Bulls and British Basketball forward Luol Deng will serve as the official ambassador for the Jr. NBA and Jr. WNBA initiative that will host pilot programmes in the markets of five football clubs, including Arsenal, Chelsea, Crystal Palace, Everton and Portsmouth.
Within the five markets, local club development with be assisted by Reach & Teach, organizing the foundation of each group and the recruiting of volunteers. In addition, each market will receive weekly coaching instruction and organized tournament opportunities, highlighted by exhibition games during NBA Europe Live 2008 in London.
The program is in its eighth season in the US and has launched successful programmes in China, Japan, India, and the Philippines. Jr. NBA and Jr. WNBA has more than 2m players, coaches, parents and officials involved in a global programme that includes 1,700 recreational youth basketball leagues which emphasize fundamental skill development, teamwork and sportsmanship.
The NBA, which moved its European to headquarters to London in 2007, continues to focus on grassroots and business development efforts in Great Britain and Europe. The UK served as the launch of NBA Jam Van presented by Hannspree, which will make more than 40 stops in five countries in 2008. London will host a game between the Miami Heat and the New Jersey Nets on 12th October as part of NBA Europe Live presented by EA Sports.
