ATP to add fifth Asian city- 14 Nov 2008 00:00:00
The ATP is facing numerous changes in 2009 as it has added a fifth Asian tournament as well as is in negotiations to replace Mercedes-Benz as a sponsor.
The additional tournament city is within the goal of the ATP to reach a new market, according to Brad Drewett, head of the international group at the ATP. The decision will reportedly be made in the next three months, as the ATP is eager to grow the brand in Asia.
Along with holding tournaments in Beijing, Tokyo and Bankok, the ATP's main Asian event next year will be the Masters 1,000 contest in Shanghai, which has Rolex Group as its main sponsor.
Mercedes, the ATP’s former sponsor of the men’s tournament, said last year that it would drop sponsorship of the Tour for other sports. Drewett claimed that although ATP hasn't set a timeline, it is in talks with multiple companies to replace the sponsorship.
