Team must part after event is axed- 23 Dec 2008 00:00:00

Olympic gold medallists Sarah Ayton, Sarah Webb and Pippa Wilson will not race together again, as their Yngling class has been removed from the 2012 Games.

Winning gold in Beijing, the three will no longer be a team after Yngling was replaced by Elliot 6m boats. There is now no fleet-racing event for three people, which means the trio will have to rethink their options if they want to compete in the London Olympics.

Reportedly favouring match racing for 2012, the International Sailing Federation axed the Ynling event last month, along with the Tornado catamaran class, decreasing the number of Olympic sailing disciplines from 11 to 10 for the London Games.

An event in one of Team GB’s most successful Olympic sports, Yngling was dominated by a British trio for two Olympics, beginning when they brought home the gold from Athens in 2004.
