Golf’s Irish Open has signed a new sponsorship deal with mobile phone network 3 which will see the tournament receive a 20% increase in prize money.
The European Tour tournament, first played in 1927, will now offer prize money of £2.7m when it is held at County Louth Golf Club in Drogheda from 14th-17th May this year.
The European Tour said the sponsorship deal with the mobile phone network 3 would secure the future of the Irish Open for the next three years.
Among the former winners of the event are Seve Ballesteros, Nick Faldo, Padraig Harrington, Colin Montgomerie, Bernhard Langer, Jose Maria Olazabal and Ian Woosnam.
