The HSBC Champions golf tournament in China has been boosted up to World Golf Championships status, becoming the fourth worldwide tournament to be just one step down from the majors.
The move for the Shanghai tournament hints at the direction and progress of golf in Asia, and the direction the sport is taking worldwide.
Taking place in November, the tournament is co-sanctioned by the European and Asian Tours, with a prize fund of £4.8m – up from last year's £3.4m.
The WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship, the WGC-CA Championship and the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational are the other World Golf Championship events.
