Investec comes in as new Derby sponsor- 5 May 2009 00:00:00
Epsom Racecourse has finally found a replacement sponsor for the departing Vodafone for its flagship Derby Festival with financial services firm Investec taking over the sponsorship rights in a long-term deal running until 2013.
Vodafone initially announced it was withdrawing its long-term association with the Derby two years ago but, with the racecourse struggling to find a replacement sponsor, agreed to continue to back the Festival for another year in 2008.
The news that Investec has signed up for the 2009 Festival, taking place on 5th-6th June, and beyond is a further boost to the racecourse following the successful launch of its £38m re-development.
The three-year revamp, which finished just ahead of time and on budget, saw the construction of a new 120-bedroom Holiday Inn Express on-site hotel, the Entrance Pavilion and Duchess’s Stand and also the return to a full calendar of 14 race days for 2009.
Investec’s history in sport sponsorship has traditionally been in rugby union with the financial services brand sponsoring the Autumn Internationals at Twickenham amongst other deals.
