European Tour loses Russian Open- 2 Jun 2009 00:00:00
Organisers of the Russian Open have been forced to cancel this year's golf tournament on the European Tour after the main sponsors pulled out of putting up prize money.
The tournament was scheduled for 6th-9th August this year and has been on the main European Tour since 2003.
However, the global financial downturn meant Russian real estate company Inteco withdrew support.
Despite the set back tournament director Hans Koeleman is convinced the 2010 tournament will run.
‘I've already talked to the European Tour. Of course, they now want financial guarantees from us,’ said Koeleman.
‘We have to provide the necessary financial guarantees by 1st July to have a good date on the European calendar next year. But I'm optimistic that we can still find a solution. This crisis can't go on forever.’
Last year's tournament at the picturesque Moscow Country Club was won by Sweden's Mikael Lundberg.
