MCC looking to buy IPL team- 25 Feb 2010 00:00:00
Indian Premier League matches could be held at Lord's if the MCC decides to buy into a team.
The MCC Chief Executive Keith Bradshaw travelled to India to hold talks with a consortium that is bidding to buy a franchise – and he is keen to bring the tournament to England: ‘It's a logical conclusion that if the MCC were involved with an IPL side, to have that side playing at Lord's would be extremely exciting,’ he said.
Two new IPL teams each with a price of £146m are up for sale at an auction to be held next month, ahead of the tournament on 12th March. The teams will then be added to the IPL in 2011.
Staging matches at Lord's would help finance the redevelopment of the ground, the cost of which is reportedly £400m.
Any such plans would have to be discussed with the England and Wales Cricket Board.
