UCI to introduce bike scanners- 21 Jun 2010 00:00:00
The International Cycling Union (UCI) is set to introduce scanners to help identify mechanical doping at next month’s Tour de France.
Swiss cyclist Fabian Cancellara has been at the centre of reported allegations that motors were being placed in bike frames to power his pedals during a recent race.
The rider and his Saxo Bank team have since strongly denied these allegations and the UCI has said that Cancellara would not be investigated and they would hold talks with bike manufacturers.
However, with electronic gears currently permitted in bikes, the UCI has deemed it necessary to run the rule over the competitor’s bikes at the annual tournament.
The Tour de France starts in Rotterdam on 3rd July and finishes in Paris on 25th July.
