The National Football League (NFL) has announced the appointment of Lord Brian Mawhinney, the former chairman of the Football League, as special advisor to NFL International.
In his new role, Lord Mawhinney, who ended a seven-year tenure as Football League chairman earlier this year, will offer guidance and counsel on the sporting landscape in order to help the development of the NFL in the UK.
A former Conservative Party chairman, Lord Mawhinney served as a Member of Parliament from 1979 to 2005 and was a Cabinet member for three years. He was created a life peer in 2005.
As chairman of the Football League, one of Lord Mawhinney’s first achievements was overseeing the reorganisation and rebranding of the competition into Championship, League One and League Two.
With a strong emphasis on governance, he also introduced the deduction of points for teams entering administration and has seen the Championship become the fourth-highest attended football league in Europe. He now serves as Honorary President.
