UEFA slams 'timid' EU White Paper- 14 Jun 2007 00:00:00
European football governing body UEFA has expressed its disappointment at the first draft of the European Union’s new ‘White Paper on Sport’, stating that the document adopts a ‘very timid and indecisive attitude towards the key issues’.
UEFA issued a statement in response to the first draft to the White Paper urging the EU to be more forceful in its intent to create a clear political framework for both the legal stability and social issues within sport.
The statement read: ‘The White Paper, as it stands, maintains that each and every sports rule can only be judged on a case-by-case basis by EU judges – and leaves the European Courts to make the law rather than interpret it.’
UEFA’s objection to the first draft won the support of other international associations from basketball, handball, volleyball and ice hockey.
