How To Get Breaking News Feeds Directly Into Your E-mail
To have your finger on the pulse of Sportindustry.biz's breaking news service, you can subscribe to our news alerts which will send an email direct to a folder in your inbox as soon as a new story or video content is added to the site – in essence keeping you up-to-date with the latest headlines as they happen.
In order to subscribe to this service, you'll need to download an RSS news feed from Sportindustry.biz in to your Outlook email system. This is free of charge and takes about five minutes – simply follow the step–by–step instructions below.
Subscribing To E-mail News Alerts In Outlook – Step–By–Step
- In order to download the Sportindustry.biz news alerts to Outlook, you will need a piece of software known as a news reader.
- A popular news reader application is RSS Popper. It's free to download from http://rsspopper.blogspot.com/2004/10/download.html. To download it, follow the steps and save the programme. To view other similar news reader software, scroll to the bottom of this page.
- Once the news reader is downloaded onto your computer, you'll need to close Outlook and then install the RSS Popper software. During installation, you may be asked if you have the Microsoft .NET Framework installed on your computer. If you have not, then you will be notified by the installer, and asked if you wish to install it. Choose to install it, if this is the case as your news feed won't work without it.
- Once the news reader software is installed, open Outlook again and an RSS Popper toolbar will appear in the top left hand corner of your Outlook interface. Turn the RSS feed on and then click on the RSS Popper button, scroll down and click on edit feeds.
- Your RSS news feeds info page will appear with all the news feeds that come with the RSS Popper package. You can turn these off by highlighting each one in turn and pressing disable which will untick the various feeds. To add the Sport Industry Group news feed, click on New RSS Feed on the right hand side of the window.
-
You now need to copy and paste the following link into the 'link' section in the 'New feed' pop-up window in your
Outlook and press OK.
http://www2.sportindustry.biz/index.php?option=com_rss&feed=RSS2.0&no_html=1 - You will be returned back to your RSS feeds info page and now, with the Sport Industry Group feed ticked, press OK. An RSS folder will now appear in your Inbox within which will be a 'Sport Industry Group' folder into which a new email will be sent every time a new story or video content is added onto the site.

What is RSS?
News feeds allow you to see when websites have added new content. You can get the latest headlines and video in one place, as soon as it is published, without having to visit the websites you have taken the feed from.
Feeds are also known as RSS. There is some discussion as to what RSS stands for, but most people plump for 'Really Simple Syndication'. In essence, the feeds themselves are just web pages, designed to be read by computers rather than people.
How do I start using feeds?
In general, the first thing you need is something called a news reader. This is a piece of software that checks the feeds and lets you read any new articles that have been added. There are many different versions, some of which are accessed using a browser, and some of which are downloadable applications.
Browser-based news readers let you catch up with your RSS feed subscriptions from any computer, whereas downloadable applications let you store them on your main computer, in the same way that you either download your e-mail using Outlook, or keep it on a web-based service like Hotmail.
Once you have chosen a news reader, all you have to do is to decide what content you want it to receive.
Please note that Internet Explorer 6 and older are not able to display RSS without an RSS reader or plug-in installed.
If you are using Internet Explorer 6 as your browser, then download or subscribe to one of the RSS readers listed below. Once you have done this, you can then add the Sport Industry news feed, by pasting our RSS link in the 'Add Subscription' section of the news reader.
Some browsers, including Firefox, Internet Explorer 7, Opera and Safari, automatically check for feeds for you when you visit a website, and display an icon when they find one. This can make subscribing to feeds much easier. For more details on these, please check their websites.
If the RSS button is clicked when using Internet Explorer 6 or earlier and the user does not have an RSS reader or a plug-in installed, all a user will see is XML code.
When confronted by such a mess of code, many people assume that the site or their computer is broken. This misunderstanding is inaccurate, and RSS is a very efficient and easy way to stay up to date with new content on your favourite sites.
