LaLiga has launched its first esports competition as part of its new ‘it’s not football, it’s LaLiga’ campaign.
LaLiga Esports will feature several competitive gaming projects which are set to be launched in the near future as the governing body of the top two leagues in Spain, looks to “bring the institution close to the millennial generation.”
The first phase will be rolled out in Spain, with the aim to be expanding internationally once it has been established.
In the past, LaLiga has also worked with video game publisher EA Sports and has three of its own games; Head Soccer, LaLiga Fantasy Marca and Head Soccer Heros.
In a statement, LaLiga said: “In recent years, LaLiga has demonstrated a firm commitment to technological innovation, immersing itself fully in the digital sector and adapting technology to the world of football. LaLiga embarks on this eSports adventure armed with the experience of having worked with EA Sports. Moreover, the organisation boasts over 10 global game licences and three of its own games: Head Soccer (over 50 million downloads in three years), LaLiga Fantasy MARCA (more than 200,000 daily users) and Head Soccer Heroes.
