London has been selected as one of the three host cities for Arena Games Triathlon events this year, alongside Munich and Singapore, which will host the grand final.

World Triathlon and Super League Triathlon made the announcement after sealing a strategic partnership late last year to develop the Arena Games, which is supported by Zwift, an online cycling and running physical training programme.

Munich will stage the opening event of the 2022 series at the Olympic-Schwimmhalle on 9th April before the London Aquatics Centre in Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park (pictured) hosts the second event on 23rd April. The grand final in Singapore will take place on 7th May.

The development of the Arena Games concept by Super League Triathlon – blending real-life and virtual racing – accelerated during the height of the pandemic, with the format allowing athletes to compete whilst adhering to social distancing.

World Triathlon President Marisol Casado said, “The three events offer a combination of vast experience of triathlon events, Olympic tradition and great hosting capabilities, so I am sure that both athletes and fans will enjoy it.”

The Arena Games feature athletes competing on self-powered treadmills, smart trainers and in an Olympic-sized swimming pool, merging elements of virtual sports, esports and real-life action.

Michael D’hulst, CEO and Co-Founder of Super League Triathlon, said, “We have continued to innovate during the pandemic, and the pinnacle of that is our Arena Games Triathlon, which we recently announced the partnership with World Triathlon.

“This series will be a milestone in triathlon’s history and these venues will really do that justice.”

Andy Salmon, British Triathlon CEO, added, “The Arena Games was a really exciting addition to the international triathlon calendar in 2021 and we’re looking forward to what the new partnership between Super League and World Triathlon will bring for the sport in 2022.

“We’re pleased that London has been included as a leg of the Arena Games once again and I know it will be a fantastic event for everyone involved.”
