Major League Baseball’s umpires have agreed to cooperate with the league as it develops an automated ball-strike system, colloquially referred to as robot umpires, according to multiple reports.

The technology has been used before, as Major League Baseball sanctions its use in the independent Atlantic League All-Star Game in July 2019, when an umpire used a smartphone and an earpiece to connect to the TrackMan computer system that uses Doppler radar to track pitches and ball strikes automatically.

As part of a five-year labour contract signed before Christmas, the Major League Baseball Umpires Association has also agreed to cooperate if the system is used at the major league level, paving the way for the technology to be used in MLB at some point in the next five years.
