NBA basketball star Steph Curry has invested in LinksDAO, a cryptocurrency-based collective of golf enthusiasts who hope to raise enough money to buy a golf course this year.
The Golden State Warriors point guard became a member of the decentralised organisation by purchasing a couple of LinksDAO non-fungible tokens (NFTs), with the group revealing the investment by posting on Twitter, “Welcome to LinksDAO, @StephenCurry30 – See you on the 1st tee!”
Following the news, the prices of LinksDAO NFTs roughly doubled.
The collective initially raised $11m (£8m equivalent) by selling out its 9,094 NFTs – including 6,363 ‘leisure membership’ tokens and 2,727 ‘global membership’ NFTs – just days after launching on the OpenSea marketplace in December. The two membership tiers offer different rights and rewards within the collective.
On its website, LinksDAO describes itself as “a global community of thousands of enthusiasts… [that has] come together to create one of the world’s greatest golf clubs.”
The group has a stated aim of acquiring “one of the world’s greatest golf courses” by the middle of this year.
Curry holds a number of other notable NFTs and is a member of the Bored Ape Yacht Club, arguably the most famous NFT community.
The three-time NBA champion also spearheaded an NFT launch himself in December to mark his own achievement of breaking the league’s all-time record for three-point baskets.
