Premier League side Southampton have revealed their new home kit for the 2020/21 season through the medium of an online arcade game, with visuals of the shirt unlockable after level three.
The game – entitled Defying the Odds since 1885 - sees the player dribble past obstacles inspired by moments in the club’s history they would rather forget. These include the infamous Ali Dia transfer and a Liverpool FC bank manager (given the Reds reputation for poaching Southampton’s stars).
While revealing the kit, overall winners of the live leaderboard will be in with a chance of winning a bundle that includes a PS4, Xbox One and a copy of FIFA 2020. Runners up will in turn win a new kit and a stadium tour from Matt Le Tissier.
The game was produced by tech firm UNIT9.
Charlie Read, Head of Marketing at Southampton FC, said: “We’ve always had a fighting spirit and we’re proud of that, so we couldn't think of a better way to mark the club’s 135th anniversary than by reminding our fans of the many times we’ve defied the odds throughout our rich history.
“Creating an interactive retro style arcade game to take fans through the club’s history and allow them to unlock the new kit, felt like the ultimate way to do this.”
