Tata Communications has launched a new Virtual Video Assisted Referee (V-VAR) solution, to enable an unlimited number of umpires, referees and judges to connect remotely from anywhere across the globe.
The solution, powered by Tata Communications’ Media Cloud, will allow the group of judges to assess and declare the winner when contestants are racing to the finishing line, offering a ‘high-tech, nail-biting experience’ to fans during a race.
The company says the product offers sporting events and federations ‘the flexibility of anywhere refereeing,’ and has already partnered with SailGP to use the technology.
For its nine-event season spanning 2021/22, SailGP’s umpires will be located in London, Portugal, and New Zealand, while the series will host races in the UK, Denmark, France, Spain, Australia, New Zealand, and the US - having already held events in Bermuda and Italy.
For the league’s second season, Tata Communications is carrying more than 20 video feeds from the broadcast centre at the event venue-site, making every signal instantly available in its Media Cloud.
The company says this enables it to allow judges to officiate remotely, ‘as if they were on the ringside of the event’
