The All England Lawn Tennis Club (AELTC) has teamed up with OPPO, the official smartphone of Wimbledon, to launch the #OPPO Wimbledon Breakthrough Award, a new initiative that will recognise breakthrough performances at this year’s event.
The concept will seek to celebrate players that perform above expectations during the 2019 Championships, which run from 1st-14th July.
The Wimbledon Channel team will recognise players that have delivered particularly inspiring performances or upsets across the five main draws, as well as the wheelchairs and juniors draws. On 9th July, after the ladies’ quarter-finals, the team will narrow down the list of players to four, with an announcement to be made live on the Wimbledon Channel.
Fans will then have from 10th July to the morning of 14th July to vote on which players deserve to win the award. The winner will be announced on the Wimbledon Channel on the evening of 14th July.
OPPO signed a five-year partnership with the AELTC in April. The smart device brand became Wimbledon’s inaugural official smartphone partner, as well as the tournament’s first Asian partner.
The Wimbledon Breakthrough Award is one of a number of activations planned to promote the new partnership.
OPPO is also a partner of Spanish football club Barcelona and the International Cricket Council.
