The FA Cup Final has become the most-watched football match of 2020, according to the BBC, who broadcast the game live on BBC One.
Arsenal’s victory over Chelsea at Wembley Stadium on Saturday 1st August was watched by a peak of 8.2 million across the BBC’s platforms, gaining an audience share of 46.1%.
According to the broadcaster, the Gunner’s record 14th FA Cup triumph also became the most-watched football game on TV of the 2019-20 season, beating the previous record which was set by Chelsea’s victory over Manchester United in the semi-final of the same competition and reached 7.3 million.
The BBC says the top six most-watched football matches of the year so far have all come in the FA Cup, which is broadcast on the free-to-air platform. The top-ranking Premier League game, however, was also screened on the BBC, and saw Southampton beat Manchester City at St Mary’s during the Premier League restart.
That match saw a narrowly larger audience than the Merseyside derby on the opening weekend of the restart, which was broadcast on Sky Sports to an audience of 5.5 million.
The FA Cup final was the first to be broadcast without fans in the stadium, and saw the trophy presented on the pitch instead of in the traditional Royal Box at Wembley.
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang lifted the trophy, made by London-based Silversmiths and Sport Industry Award trophy-makers Thomas Lyte.
