David Beckham has signed a £150 million deal to become an ambassador for Qatar, according to reports.

The reported ten-year deal will see the former England captain become the face of the 2022 Qatar World Cup.

Earlier this month, Beckham flew to Doha to tour stadiums and meet with officials in preparation for the tournament.

While in Qatar  he was reassured that it will be safe for supporters to display rainbow flags in stadiums, even though homosexuality is illegal in Qatar and punishable to up to three years in prison.

Furthermore, Qatar has also been widely criticised for its human rights record and the treatment of workers constructing the stadiums.

Beckham, who has had links with the Qataris since he played for PSG, will also promote its tourism and culture.

A source said: "David believes in Qatar’s commitment to progress and that the World Cup — the first to be held in the Arab world — can effect significant positive change.

“He strongly believes in the power of football to bridge differences but, crucially, has seen the progress on issues that matter.

The 2022 FIFA World Cup will kick off in Qatar from 21 November 2022.
