The Bloomberg Square Mile Relay, a global running series active across 12 cities around the world, has unveiled its new project – Virtual Club – which will see the community of runners come together online to drive exercise alongside positive social impact.
The new platform connects colleagues from companies that have a multi-national footprint across the 12 cities to train and compete together in virtual challenges, earning points towards for both themselves and their companies.
In turn, the companies will climb both local and global rankings before ultimately collecting unlockable charity donations based on activity levels.
Participants will be able to earn points by either walking or running and the virtual platform is compatible with most wearable fitness trackers. Donations will go towards supporting organisations through Square Mile Sport’s charitable partner, The Extra Mile, which is now focussing on a response to the Coronavirus pandemic and inequalities created as a result.
Discussing the new platform, Square Mile Sport Managing Director, James Hassett, said: “During this unprecedented time, where across the globe we have been forced to change our work and lifestyle habits, the importance of community, daily physical activity and connection to society are as high as ever.
“The Virtual Club will ensure our global community of corporate participants can still go The Extra Mile and run, jog or walk as a team to help unlock vital funds for our partner charities around the world, to help address the current public health issues in each race city.”
The new platform is underpinned by a social campaign called #RunForYourCity, which will drop across Bloomberg Square Mile Relay’s digital channels.
