Eleven Sports is to launch two new sports channels in the UK after securing broadcast rights to Serie A games from 2018/19, the global sports provider has announced.
The Aser company, which already holds UK and Ireland rights to LaLiga from next season, also revealed backing from IMG as part of the new venture.
Eleven Sports 1 and Eleven Sports 2 will launch via an online streaming platform in August.
Its offering will now include live and exclusive coverage of every Serie A match, following agreement of the three-year deal, with the broadcaster promising further premium rights acquisitions over coming weeks.
The news comes after Cristiano Ronaldo’s recent move to Serie A club Juventus in a reported £88m deal.
Marc Watson, Eleven Sports’ executive chairman and group CEO, claims the new channels will shake up broadcast sport in the UK.
Commenting on the launch, Watson said: “With more top-tier rights to come in addition to Serie A and LaLiga, Eleven Sport; entry in to the UK and Ireland has changed the market dynamics.
“History has shown new rivals bring innovation and fresh thinking to the ways in which premium sports action is produced, packaged and distributed for fans.”
Eleven Sports’ new channels are to be delivered in partnership with IMG, which is to take a minority stake in the business in the UK and Ireland.
The global media giant will produce output for the online platform, whose two permanent channels will be complemented by the use of four, live “pop up” channels when scheduling clashes demand.
Eleven Sports says it in discussions with other major media platforms in the UK and Ireland to maximise access to its service, in line with the “platform-agnostic” approach it uses in other markets.
The global provider replaces BT Sport as Serie A rights holder in the UK and Ireland. It already holds rights to the Italian league in markets including Portugal, Belgium and Taiwan.
Serie A President Gaetano Miccichè said: “We have worked very successfully with Eleven Sports in the last three years to take world-class Serie A action to football fans in several markets around the world
“We are delighted to continue our partnership in the UK and Ireland and we are looking forward to being a big part of Eleven’s sport focused strategy that will place us at the forefront of their innovative offer in what is a very important market for Serie A.”
