Hyundai Motor has been announced as one of the event sponsors for the Royal Parks Foundation Half Marathon for this year’s race on Sunday 11th October.

As part of the sponsorship package, the marathon will be led by Hyundai’s zero emissions ix35 Fuel Cell – the world’s first commercially available hydrogen-powered car, which emits nothing but water vapour.

The vehicle will lead the front runners around the 13.1 mile route which takes participants through four of London’s eight Royal Parks.

The Royal Parks Foundation Half Marathon has this year unveiled a new route for the first time in its eight year history.

The changes will see runners cover the full length of Whitehall, up to Parliament Square and within metres of the Houses of Parliament and Big Ben, before they loop back towards Trafalgar Square and up The Strand. The four Royal Parks that the route loops through remain unchanged, with this scenic run still taking in Hyde Park, The Green Park, St James’s Park and Kensington Gardens.

Richard Cooper, corporate partnerships manager of The Royal Parks Foundation, said: “We are absolutely delighted to partner with Hyundai. The Royal Parks Half was launched in 2008 with the key objective of being as sustainable as possible so we are very impressed by Hyundai’s commitment to sustainable fuel technologies. We aim to make race day as green and sustainable as possible and 66% of all waste from the event is recycled and now avoids landfill sites.

“The race is also known for being one of the greenest events in the UK. Awareness amongst runners about our commitment to being green is growing year on year, with our survey of runners showing that 87.8% of all participants last year were aware of our green aims and objectives. New partnerships with companies that share those aims, such as Hyundai Motor, will only help us continue to spread that awareness, and we hope to be over the 90% mark this time around.”

Tony Whitehorn, president and CEO, Hyundai Motor UK, commented: “Our partnership with The Royal Parks Foundation Half Marathon is a fantastic opportunity for Hyundai to demonstrate the eco-credentials of our production fuel cell vehicle. It should be a great day, and we’re pleased to be a part of the Marathon’s quest to become the greenest event in the UK.

“Good luck to everyone taking part in the Half Marathon in October!”
