As the audio industry continues to boom, Sport Industry Group is pleased to announce the launch of the Sport Podcast Awards – celebrating the very best of sport’s global audio community.

There are now over 1 million podcasts worldwide, and in the UK alone more than 4 million people listened to a sport-based podcast in 2020, according to research firm Rajar.

The Sport Podcast Awards, brought to you by the team behind the world-leading Sport Industry Awards, will therefore celebrate and share in the success of one of the industry’s fastest growing mediums and unite the sport podcasting community under one umbrella, with entries accepted from across the globe.

Sport Industry Group Chairman and Benchmark Founder, Nick Keller, said:

“I love audio and the part it has played in all our lives over the last months – it has informed, entertained, inspired and given us deeper insight than ever. Most of all, though, it is a medium that has brought people closer together and I have loved the intimacy and personal nature of them. They are unquestionably here to stay and with so much content and talent, it seems only right to help uplift the work that is going on and celebrate those that do it well.

“The audio space is rapidly increasing, and sport is playing a pivotal role in its future. Where radio and TV have stood for so long, we now have podcasting, and there is a real hotbed of talented creators. We want to provide our 20 years of experience to help nurture and cultivate this community, to celebrate the best and help the industry to grow.

“The Sport Podcast Awards will be so much more than just an annual celebration. It will be a platform to incubate this community, to nurture the talented creators, producers, and presenters out there at the moment, and in the future.”

To mark the launch, the Sport Podcast Awards has also revealed the first three names of its marquee Advisory Board, as long-time presenter Gabby Logan, former Sky Sports Managing Director Barney Francis and Facebook’s Director of Global Sport Partnerships, Peter Hutton, all join – bringing a wealth of knowledge, experience and expertise from across the sport content space.

“Having been in TV for so long, I’ve been fascinated by the rapid growth of audio in sport,” said Logan upon joining the Advisory Board, “and having been in the sport entertainment industry for so long I’m proud to now play a role in giving back by celebrating and propelling this community forward.

“For many years I’ve been in front of the microphone, but now the Sport Podcast Awards gives me the opportunity to go behind-the-scenes with the immensely talented presenters and producers coming through. I cannot wait to get started on what promises to be a really exciting journey in a truly fast-growing space for sport.”

Francis added: “At Sky Sports, we were always striving to innovate our content and I’m yet to see a medium accelerate as fast as podcasting has done in recent years. It truly takes the presenters to an intimate place with the listener, and the potential for sport is immense. The Sport Podcast Awards are going to play a central role as this community continues to thrive, and I’m proud to be joining the Advisory Board today.”

The full list of categories and criteria will all be revealed HERE when entries open at the end of May.
