The 2020 Indian Premier League (IPL) – postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic – will now take place across September, October and November at bio-secure venues in the United Arab Emirates.
Starting on the 19th September, the Twenty20 tournament will be played in three secure venues in Dubai, Sharjah and Abu Dhabi. It will comprise of 60 matches across 51 days (up from 44 last year) and will see the final played out on 8th November.
An additional reason behind the tournament being played in the UAE is a more relaxed quarantine procedure for international players. Anyone travelling to the UAE must achieve a negative test before flying and another upon landing, with no other quarantine applicable. If they fail one of the test, a short 5 day quarantine is to be observed.
A return for the IPL had looked unlikely, however with the ICC postponing the Men's T20 World Cup, originally scheduled from 18th October to 15th November - a window opened up for IPL to be held.
The eight franchise tournament is one of the most coveted Twenty20 tournaments in the world, with international players joining franchises in multi-million pound deals. Mumbai Indians are the current holders and will look to defend their crown in UAE.
