Manchester City Women will travel to the United States during pre-season, after details of the first Women’s International Champions Cup was confirmed this week.
The event will run alongside the existing men’s tournaments with four clubs competing in the inaugural event from 27th July to 29th July, while organisers plan to double the tournament in size for 2019.
Women’s Super League champions Manchester City will be joined by French Division 1 Féminine side Paris Saint-Germain, US National Women’s Soccer League club North Carolina Courage, and one additional team that is yet to be announced.
Matches will be staged at Hard Rock Stadium, home of NFL franchise, the Miami Dolphins.
Ahead of the pre-season tour, Gavin Makel, head of women’s football, Manchester City commented: “Everyone at Manchester City is looking forward to this summer’s pre-season tour to the US. Competing in an elite tournament is the best preparation for what will be another action-packed season for us.
“We are delighted that the tour will also allow us the opportunity to meet and connect with our growing fan base in the US, whose support is important to us all.”
Steph Houghton, Manchester City captain, added: “I can’t wait to visit the US with Manchester City. I’ve previously competed in America at the She Believes Cup and am always humbled by the incredible support of the fans out there. To have the chance to visit the US with Man City and meet all of our fans is something I know the whole team is looking forward to.”
Manchester City are the current FA Women’s Super League champions and SSE Women’s FA Cup holders. Last season the club competed in the UEFA Women’s Champions League for the first time, making it to the semi-final round, and this year continue to compete at the highest level, once again securing a place in the UWCL semi-finals.
The club boosted their US-exposure in March 2017, after agreeing a short-term deal with US women’s football star, Carli Lloyd (pictured above).
