Major League Baseball (MLB) has announced that its 2019 London Series between the Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees delivered record merchandise sales for one day at a single venue.
The two games at London Stadium also surpassed three-day MLB All-Star merchandise sales figures dating back to the 2008 fixture in New York. The league did not disclose specific details of the sales.
The two games attracted a total attendance of 118,718. The 59,659 attendance for the first game marked the best-attended MLB game ever played on international soil, and the best-attended MLB game since 2003.
MLB London Series also generated 13.95 million social media impressions during the week of the event, while 14,729 fans attended London Yards, the baseball-themed festival that featured interactive events, virtual reality, music and food from Boston and New York. MLB’s PLAY BALL Park initiative, which served as a hub for youth-focused baseball and softball activities, also attracted 10,276 attendees.
70% of tickets were sold to UK-based fans, with 20% sold to people in the US and 10% to the rest of the world.
MLB will return to London Stadium in 2020 for two games between the St. Louis Cardinals and the Chicago Cubs.
