Virgin Racing Formula E Team has appointed the sports and sponsorship communications agency Pitch as it prepares to compete in the inaugural 2014 FIA Formula E Championship, just days after the new motorsport series confirmed a London event will be held in Battersea Park in June 2015.

Pitch will provide all PR and social media support for Virgin Racing as the team gears up for the first race of the championship, which takes place in Beijing in September, and announced its driver line-up of Jaime Alguersuari and Sam Bird last month.

Pitch will play a key role in promoting the team, the drivers and producing content for its social media channels.

Virgin Racing team principal Alex Tai said: ‘As we ready ourselves for the beginning of the 2014 Formula E Championship, I'm delighted to welcome Pitch to the Virgin Racing Formula E team. Having the support of a leading communications consultancy is a great addition and reflects our desire to create a winning team in the first season of the Championship.’

Henry Chappell, chief executive, Pitch added: ‘Virgin is a brand renowned for technological innovation and sporting passion so it is hugely exciting to be given the chance to promote the Virgin Racing Formula E team. We look forward to playing our part in a successful first season for Virgin's return to top-flight motor sport.’

The Formula E Championship intends to showcase electric car technology and speed up development and innovation amongst manufacturers. Starting in China, the Championship will take place on street circuits in the heart of 10 of the world's leading cities - including London, Miami and Beunos Aires – racing around their iconic landmarks.

The London leg of the Championship was confirmed just this week, with precise details of the Battersea event, which will be the final race of the inaugural Formula E season, yet to be revealed.

However, the Mayor of London Boris Johnson said of the race: ‘The atmosphere will quite literally be electric and Battersea, which is already booming with the buzz of regeneration, will be alive with the excitement that this new, world-class event will no doubt spark.’

In a good week for the agency, Pitch also confirmed on Tuesday that it had been appointed by McCain to promote its UK activation partnership around the Tour de France Grand Depart.
