Real Madrid have formally completed their £271,000 buyout of Madrid-based outfit Tacon, becoming the final major European football club to launch a women’s team.

Formed in 2014, Tacon – who will be renamed Real Madrid Femenino – were promoted to the Spanish top flight last season and have since gone on a transfer spending spree guaranteed by Real Madrid ownership.

In a statement, Real Madrid’s President Florentino Perez hailed the moment, claiming the “time had come to build a team to be proud of,” however some had been critical of Los Blancos delayed response, particularly given the success of FC Barcelona Femení and Atlético Madrid Femenino.

Alongside the first team, the club will also field an Under-16s and Under-18s side, while all staff and players will be based out of Real Madrid City, the club’s training and development complex.
