SailGP has announced a new multi-year partnership with US software brand Cognizant, which will become the Official Digital Transformation Partner of the global racing series.
The brand’s digital transformation and software engineering expertise will be used to improve SailGP’s audience insights, as well as creating an immersive fan experience for the championship’s viewers.
Cognizant will collaborate with cloud-based platform Oracle in enhancing the capabilities of Internet of Things (IoT) technology on the SailGP F50 catamarans. This will be used to inform decisions, and improve performance on the water. The fleet of boats used in the series generates some 30,000 data points per second, and will see a number of enhancements as a result of the partnership, including the addition of real-time updates on race performance metrics such as athletes heart rate and the speed of the boats.
“We are pleased to be SailGP’s Official Digital Transformation Partner, bringing Cognizant’s expertise in digital transformation and software engineering to the forefront of the first climate-positive sail racing championship in the world,” said Ursula Morgenstern, President, Cognizant Global Growth Markets.
“Many of our clients are sailing enthusiasts. It is an honor to align with an organization that has demonstrated similar growth and is committed to a sustainable future, as well as diversity and inclusion.”
Sir Russell Coutts, CEO, SailGP, added: “This is the second major global partnership that we have announced prior to our second season and we are thrilled to join forces with another like-minded partner that shares our commitments and values.
“Starting today, Cognizant will actively participate in SailGP’s development and our Race for the Future purpose-led agenda, aimed at accelerating change to a cleaner and more inclusive future.”
The software platform will also align with SailGP’s Race for the Future agenda, which will see the series aim to accelerate the transition to clean energy as part of its ‘Powered By Nature’ vision, and will also transform the SailGP website to be more dynamic, and in future seasons, enhance its mobile app as well.
SailGP will also work with its host cities to implement solutions to mitigate climate change, and has also recently launched the bidding process for future host cities.
The news comes as the latest entry into sport for Cognizant, which has recently announced a series of sports sponsorships, including being named the title partner of the Aston Martin Formula One Team, and a Global Partner of the PGA TOUR’s Presidents Cup.
SailGP‘s Season 2, meanwhile, kicks off on 24th April in Bermuda, with an eight-event championship set to take place across three continents, culminating in a final race in San Francisco in March 2022.
