As the National Lottery celebrates its 25th birthday, stars from a variety of sports organisations in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland who have received lottery funding have starred in a video message to say thank you to those who play regularly.
The video, entitled Because You Play, features the likes of footballer Frank Kirby, World Cup-winning cricket captain Eoin Morgan, swimmer Duncan Scott and wheelchair basketballer Conn Nagle as well as grassroots players and volunteers from a handful of other sports. In the last 25 years, £5.7bn has been invested into grassroots sports, funding facilities and playing fields as well as creating opportunities for people to take part in sport.
The video shows how some of those funds have been put to use, such as the ECB’s All Stars Cricket programme and South Asian Action Plan, which won the Diversity and Inclusion Award at the Sport Industry Awards 2019.
Gymnast Max Whitlock said: “It’s so important to invest in grassroots sport, and help people get active and get fit. There are so many benefits to taking part in sporting activities, and National Lottery Players are making it possible.”
National Lottery 25th birthday celebrations are running for a six-week period, which began in mid-October and will end on 6th December 2019.
