Double Olympic champion Daley Thompson has celebrated his 60th birthday by opening a pop-up gym in London with Worldwide Olympic Partner Bridgestone.
The decathlete, a 1980s icon, teamed up with the global tyre brand as part of a campaign to encourage people to keep moving and chasing their dreams, whatever their age.
The gym was open for one day only on the Riverside Grass at London’s Southbank. More than 100 people of all ages each took part in a High Intensity Interval Training session, specially designed by Thompson. The workout was made up of ten different exercises, ranging from box jumps, press-ups, shuttle runs to sit-ups, with each one completed for 60 seconds at a time.
Thompson, whose self-belief and focused attitude was key to his successful athletics career, was on hand throughout the day to encourage and inspire all those who took part.
The pop-up gym also reunited him with a group of 60 fellow 60+ year-olds with whom he climbed Snowdon at the start of June.
A film of the adventure, celebrating people’s spirit and perseverance, regardless of their age, was also released this week.
Commenting on the activity, Daley Thompson said: “I have loved having my own pop-up gym here on the Southbank today with Bridgestone and meeting everyone who have enthusiastically come down, taken part and wished me a Happy Birthday.
“It’s why I am proud to be part of Bridgestone’s Olympic partnership campaign, Chase Your Dream, No Matter What as I believe we all have the strength, no matter what our age, to keep chasing our dreams, despite the obstacles life throws at us.”
Participant Meg Martin, 63 from Essex, who took part in the climb up Snowdon said: “It was Just good fun and it shows a lot of us have a very competitive spirit too. Everyone was so motivating.
“It was great fun, to come together, do something slightly different and see each other again. Roll on life’s next challenge, whatever it is!”
Bridgestone’s ‘Chase Your Dream, No Matter What’ campaign is a Europe-wide activation of the brand’s Worldwide Olympic partnership. It was shortlisted for the BT Sport Industry Awards 2018 as International Marketing Campaign of the Year in association with SMG Insight.
The motivational platform aims to encourage, inspire and help people of all ages, abilities and passions to find the strength to chase their dream and overcome the obstacles they face on life’s journey.
The campaign uses the stories of former and current Olympians who have persevered to chase their dreams, no matter what. Other UK ambassadors include diver Chris Mears and golfer Charley Hull.
Daley's pop up gym was delivered by creative agency WeAreFearless, winner of Young Agency of the Year at the BT Sport Industry Awards 2018.
