Super League makes salary cap changes

Rugby league’s Super League is to implement a new salary cap system in a bid to halt the worrying trend of clubs over-spending on player wages.

The 12 clubs making up rugby league’s top-flight will use the pro-active salary cap system currently used by their Australian counterparts.

The system calculates clubs' salary cap positions at the start of and during the season, with signings only allowed if they have room under the cap.

Relegation row hits Super League

Plans to scrap promotion and relegation to and from the Super League have met with significant opposition from the clubs in the divisions below rugby league’s top-flight.

The Super League is currently reviewing a plan to end the relegation and promotion system from 2009 but the National League clubs have voiced their concerns over the move, stating that the decision should only be made by the Rugby League Council as opposed to the top-flight league alone.

Super League secures Lamb's tie-up

The Rugby Football League has replaced its Super League drinks sponsor Castlemaine XXXX with spirits brand Lamb’s Navy Rum in a new one-year deal.

The new contract will see Lamb’s Navy Rum receive exposure within the rugby league stadia and through the Super League’s TV rights deal with Sky Sports and the BBC for the 2007 season.

Lamb’s Navy Rum joins the league’s existing sponsorship partners Gillette, Fujitsu Siemens, and Nokia all of which sit underneath primary title sponsor Engage.

Challenge Cup gets new title sponsor

Rugby league’s Challenge Cup has a new title sponsor after governing body the Rugby Football League (RFL) struck a six-year deal with Leeds Metropolitan University.

The contract, worth a reported £6m-£10m, will see the knock-out tournament branded as the Carnegie Challenge Cup.

This season’s competition begins next month with the first-round games to be played on 3-4 February.

The new deal, which sees the competition named after Leeds Met's Carnegie Faculty of Sport and Education, runs until 2012.

RFL hires Ptarmigan for Challenge Cup contract

Leeds-based sports marketing agency Ptarmigan has picked up the contract to raise the profile of rugby league’s Challenge Cup competition amongst potential sponsors.

Ptarmigan Sports Marketing has been appointed by the sport’s governing body the Rugby Football League with a view to finding a title sponsor for the Challenge Cup ahead of the new season.

Utilities brand Powergen pulled its title sponsorship of the competition at the end of last season following its buyout by E.ON.

Rugby league set for TV boost

Rugby league’s second-tier domestic competition, the National League, is set for a significant boost with a TV deal with British Eurosport close to completion.

The Rugby Football League is believed to have brokered a deal which will see British Eurosport broadcast live National League matches on Thursday nights this year.
